Comparison of Simple Penile Dressings following Hypospadias Repair: does it really matter?

Background: Hypospadias repair requires an appropriate wound dressing to prevent complications, but there is a lack of studies comparing the efficacy different dressings. Aim: To compare clinical outcomes occlusive hydrocolloid and petroleum-impregnated gauze with zinc oxide adhesive plaster, recommend based on efficacy, availability, cost-effectiveness. Methods: We performed retrospective cohort study paediatric patients who had undergone hypospadias between August 2017 November 2020 at Dr. Ruth K. M. Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, Pakistan. All receiving one two dressings, (group A) or plaster B) during primary secondary repair, operated by same surgeon were included in this study. Patients missing data excluded. There was only patient lost follow up Results: A total 64 male mean age 6.0 ± 3.4 years Group (n=37) received thick 10 x cm whereas, B (n=27), 2.5 applied over wound. In group A, five (13.5%) suffered post-operative fistula dehiscence. Whereas, B, seen three (11.1%). This provides evidence-based information clinicians healthcare providers regarding use dressings for repair. By demonstrating cheaper more accessible dressing, could help improve access care reduce costs patients, especially resource-limited settings.
